I'm Not Letting Go~~Chapter 16
As I held to him, once again I grew angrier. Someone Michael had trusted had hurt him, deeply. It was just so unfair what he had to constantly endure. It was hard to see him hurt so much. The day continued on and Michael decided we'd try to go out and forget the newest bad news about him. We went to dinner at a wonderful little restaurant called the Glass Menagerie, where sculptures adorned the room all done in glass and crystal and all of animals like unicorns, winged horses and the like. It was magical inside. Several people would stop over to tell him how much he resembled Michael Jackson, but would politely leave when he'd start talking with a different accent. Sometimes it was hard for me to keep a straight face with some of the voices he came up with! After dinner, we took a short walk hand in hand along the pier and as we headed back to his car, we passed a little club called," Swan Song" that had a notice outside promoting it was Michael Jackson karaoke night. " Wanna go it?" he grinned. " Sure." I answered him and we walked into the dimly lit club together. On the club was a mandoing karaoke, singing or tryint to sing," Black or White." Many eyes were on Michael as we sat down and he whispered to me with a smile," He's awful." " Yeah he is." I agreed. " What'll it be guys?" The waitress asked us. " The lady will have a coke zero and I'll just have a coke." he said with his british accent. " Comin' right up." she said. The man finished his song , getting mercy applause from the little group gathered there. " Are you gonna sing?" I asked him quietly. " I dunno...kinda want to." he grinned. " I'm sure you do." I smiled. " What about you?" " Me?" I laughed," Notta chance." " C'mon Leslie, for me." he pleaded. " Michael I can't. I'd be scared to death." " You could sing with me, then you wouldn't be alone." he said. " I couldn't, Michael. I'd be terrified. You're the entertainer, not me." I told him. He kissed my cheek," My shy angel." " Your terrified chicken." I corrected him, smiling. " I bet you'd sing with Barry." he teased me. " Oh not again," I covered my face with my hands. Michael laughed," Okay, okay, jut just so you know, you'll never see any of these people again, so if you WERE to sing, you'd never have to face them or their critique of you." We listened a while more and watched a few more "singers". The first doing " Ben ", not all too well. The next did a country song, the next attempted BAD--and WAS, and the next a song by Beyonce. Michael enjoyed watching and listening, but I could tell he was aching to perform. It was in his blood. The beat, the music, the crowd. " Okay," the dj spoke" Who's next? C'mon, it doesn't HAVE to be a Michael Jackson song." " Oh yes it does," he whispered to me and leaned over to kiss my cheek," Back soon." I smiled watching him walk up to the stage and people were already clamoring seeing his appearance. The dj spoke," Whoa now, this guy is serious. What's your name?" " Uh, Odie." Michael replied glancing out at me, still using his British accent, but a deeper voice. " Odie, you got the look. You got the chops?" the dj asked. " ...well maybe." " Let's see. Whatt're you gonna sing for us, Odie?" " Billie Jean." he replied. " Okay Odie, the stage is yours. The lyrics are gonna run right over there and the music will sound just like the original MJ track, okay? Any questions?" " Nope." " Okay everyone, give it up for Odie!" Everyone applauded a little and Michael closed his eyes for a moment, then exhaled heavily and stood waiting for the music. When it began, Michael came alive. The audience went nuts over his performance, yelling and shouting like crazy. Michael was smart enough to not give 110%--after all, he wasn't supposed to be Michael Jackson performing. And doing a few little dance moves was better than none. " Way to go Odie," the dj said to him," Terrific job!" " Thank you." Michael walked off the stage and back to our table, kissing my cheek as he sat down," Hiya." " Hi. You were wonderful." I said kissing him gently, I'm so proud of you." " I wasn't too "me" was I?" " It was just perfect," I assured him," And you are just incredible to watch." " Thank you, angel." " You know, you're gonna win." He chuckled," Kinda seems unfair for me to." he said " You think the "BAD" guy should?" I asked, teasing. " Oh God no," he laughed. We could hear as we talked that " Odie" was the buzz of the club. Michael was pure entertainment when he performed---even when he wasn't giving his all, he was incredible. His phone began to ring and he answered quickly," Hello? Oh hey, hi. Well, I'm not there, I'm with Leslie at a little club down by the waterfront called Swan Song. It's Michael Jackson karaoke night," he said with a grin," Sure, c'mon down. Love to see you." He hung up and smiled at me," We're going to have a visitor." " A visitor?" " Uh huh." He said," Barry...you know....Gibb?" " Oh nooo." I laid my head down on the table and Michael giggled, " I promise, I won't pick on you. I promise." " Odie," The dj said as he came up to us," You really got the crowd going. Would you mind doing another song?" Michael looked at me with a clear," Should I?" look, and I gave him a little smile," Go ahead." I said. " Okay," he answered," Just once more." he agreed then gave me a soft kiss," I'll be back soon. Don't give my place away." " Notta chance. Enjoy yourself." He gave me a wink and walked away, already getting applause. Soon Michael began "The Way You Make me Feel" and of course was terrific, even acting like he needed to know the words as he went along. He was just terrific. Barry walked in as Michael performed and he spotted me, speaking as he leaned down to kiss my cheek, " Hello love." " Hi Barry. Have a seat." " Thank you, darlin'. Uh....what's he doing?" " Pretending to not be who he is." I smiled. Barry smiled, watching him but spoke to me," How are you handling all of this?" " Okay," I said," He's really an amazing man." " Yes, he is," Barry agreed and the waitress walked back over. " Oh hi handsome, what can I get for you?" " Sake, if you have it." he replied. " We do. Would you like that with or without my phone number?" she smiled. Barry held up his left hand to show his wedding ring," Sorry, love. Married to a very jealous scot." " Figures. Sake coming up." She walked away and I laughed," You still get hit on." He laughed," Oh, not so much these days." Michael finished his song and walked over to the table, giving Barry's arm a friendly pat," Hey you made it." " Have GPS will travel." he replied," Young man, you've still got it. You're great." " Oh thanks. Coming from you that means an awful lot." he sat down beside me and softly kissed my cheek," Enjoying the mini concert." " I am. You are just great." " Thank you, angel." he said," Barry, you gonna sing?" Barry laughed," Oh goodness me. I can't do you." he sailed at his friend," I can barely do ME these days, mate." " Leslie won't sing either." he said. " I bet you have a beautiful voice, love. Why won't you sing?" " Hey now, no ganging up on me." I told them. " So if you won't sing alone," Barry said," Sing with me." " W-w-w-with YOU?????" I stammered. " C'mon, I bet you know my stuff better than I do," he stood up and grabbed my hand," I'll bring her back in one piece, mate." " Okay." Michael smiled. " Michael--" I pleaded looking at him as Barry walked me away from the table and we reached the dj on the stage. " Uh, excuse me," Barry said. " You're Barry Gibb." the guy said, stunned. " I am. I wondered if I could sing for a few moments with my beautiful friend." " Well God, yes, of course, you can. Anytime." he said," What a night. The best Jackson impersonator and now Barry Gibb--" Barry smiled at me," Islands in the stream?" " Barry, I CAN'T sing in front of people." " Just pretend they're not there. Just focus on singing with me and I promise you I won't let go of your hand, okay?" He said," Just focus on the music." " Just a second, I'll be right back." I let go of his hand, walked back to our table and Michael looked quizzically at me. " You okay?" I picked up Barry's sake and took a big gulp, coughed, then looked at Michael," I'll let you know." He laughed," Break a leg, angel." " I'm gonna break BOTH of yours." I teased him and walked back to Barry who'd seen what I'd done. He chuckled," Better?" " That remains to be seen." " Hey gang," the dj spoke," We have a great treat tonight. He's a founding member of the Bee Gees and an amazing songwriter and he'd like to perform for you with a friend of his tonight. Please give up some love for Mr. Barry Gibb!" Everyone applauded and cheered and still he held my hand as promised," Thank you all for indulging me a little tonight. My beautiful friend and I are going to perform a song that my brothers and I wrote initially for Diana Ross, but somehow it got recorded by Kenny Rogers and the rest, so they say, is history. Here for you now, Islands In The Stream." As the intro music began I held tighter to Barry's hand and he laced his fingers with mine as he began to sing and people applauded him. And when it came my time to join him, I did just what he had said and tried to focus on him and the music. Clearly he was impressed by my voice as his face showed it when he looked at me. I'd always loved his smile. When the chorus came, I finally bravely, looked out at Michael who was on the edge of his seat, grinning ear to ear. When the song ended Barry smiled and kissed my hand, then hugged me and walked me back to the table and Michael quickly jumped up and flung his arms around me," I am SO proud of you!! You have a beautiful voice!!" " She's great, Michael. You have a great voice, love." " Oh cut it out, you two." I said, blushing and sitting down between them as Michael's hand clasped mine again," Just terrific," he beamed proudly and laced our fingers. " Thank Barry's sake." " Ahhh, bravery in a cup." Barry teased.
