Baby, I Love You (Part One)
Hi. Here is a story, which is influenced by the early 1960s and girl groups back then. Enjoy!! P.S. the setting will be in the early 1960s but Michael will look like he did in the HIStory Era and he is a producer instead of a singer/dancer ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------- It was a hot summer day in Harlem, New York. July 16, 1961. My two sisters, Darcy and Marilyn, and I decided to sneak out of our apartment while Daddy was at work and while Mama was sleeping. We hadn't been allowed to leave our compound at this specific time, which was 6:00 pm. But we didn't care and left anyway. We had stopped at the corner of a cornerstore on 125th street, "Tito's," owned by a couple of Puerto Ricans, to buy candy, potato chips, ice cream bars, etc. Junk food. Then we walked to the Apollo Theater. There we were blinded with all of the beautiful sights shown inside that building. The wonder- ful sparkling lights delighted us. It our main wish to be able to step foot into the Apollo Theater. Some days, walking home from school, my sisters and I would attempt to peek inside by laying our hands onto the glass and stare intensely into it, hoping to see exciting features onto the stage. Everyday, we would lay on our beds, close our eyes, and dream. Dream about the three of us on the stage, in our flowing, sparkling, red dresses, fufilled with sequins and glitter, and us being pou- red with glitz, glamour, and glory. Our microphones would be glued into our hands, our voices filling up the air, and a roaring sea of admirers clearly impressed and entertained with our talent. That was what we dreamed of every night and day. But, we always believed that it could only occur in our fantas- ies. Until we met Mr. Jackson.... "Aww man, we're busted," Marilyn said. "We ain't busted, Marilyn. It's not like Mama woke up. She never wakes up at 6 pm," Darcy replied, smacking her teeth. "No, it's not that. While Mama was sleepin, I snuck in her room and took ten dollars. I planned to bring five back, but we spent seven dollars. Aww, man, Mama's gonna chew us out." "Nah, she ain't gonna chew us out. She's gonna chew you out, 'cuz you the one that took her money," I said, pointing the finger at Marilyn. "But all of us spent it." "So? We can still earn five dollars," Darcy said. "How?" Marilyn shouted in a panic. "Calm down. We can find a bucket on the street so people can put money into it and we can just sing for money." "Darcy, that's a good idea," I said. Marilyn, Darcy, and myself were part of a family who were greatly known in Harlem for their musical talent. We had made up a singing trio, called "The Harlemettes." I was lead singer and a soprano and alto, Marilyn was alto and tenor, and Darcy was a tenor and bass, so we often switched parts during songs. As singing sisters, we sung songs by other successful girl groups and we hoped to become a new them someday. At this time, Marilyn was sixteen, Darcy was seventeen, and I was fifteen, so our voices definitely matured. The three of us stood in a triangle, with me being up in front and Marilyn and Darcy were behind me on each of my sides. We stood near Tito's on 125th Street. We began to sing our cover of "Dedicated To The One I Love" by the Shirelles. Thirty seconds passed and already a crowd began to form, embracing our voices blending together and our proper balance. People began to place money into the bucket. The amount of money was more than we begged for. We were very satisfied. Just then, a man with a white dress shirt, gray suspenders, and a black tie, who peered directly into my eyes. His eyes were beautifully pierced and focused. He looked like this: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=33790085 As soon as I saw him, my heart skipped many beats, stopped for a half of a second, then started skipping again. My heart was playing tricks on me. Was he that beautiful? Maybe he was.. After our last performance, the man slowly clapped his hands and slowly drifted closer to me and my sisters. "That...was...fantastic," he said with emphasis on his voice. "Thanks!" Marilyn yelled with joy as she was in a hurry to shake his hand. "I really am amazed with you girls' performance." "And I am really pleased with how fine-lookin' you are," Darcy responded batting her eyelashes at him, trying to get closer to him. "Perhaps, you would like to get to know me better." "Um, Miss, I have a wife," he said, chuckling. Darcy cursed, "Damn! Why do all of the nice-lookin' ones have wives?" "Excuse her, Sir. She's mentally challenged," Marilyn said, pulling Darcy away from her. I just stood, frozen at this man's eyes. His gorgeous eyes. I felt like a statue just being in his presence. "And what's your name, Miss?" After fifteen seconds of not realizing what he asked me, Marilyn had to answer for me. "Her name's Sophia," Marilyn answered, nudging me. "Uh," I said, reentering reality. "I am very pleased to meet you, Miss Sophia," he said, taking my hand and placing his lips onto it. My body slightly quiver- ed with delight at his charm. "Uh..u-uh...." "Sophia, I am very impressed with your astounding voice." "Uh...um...th-thanks," I finally had the strength to say. "May I say, you are also very beautiful." "Uh..um...uh..thank you. Thank you very much.." Marilyn and Darcy's mouth dropped at his complement. "My pleasure," he said with a smile stuck onto his face. "Ladi- es, I am record producer Michael Jackson, and I work alongside Berry Gordy at Motown Records and I would love for you three girls to come to Detroit and audition to be new recording stars." Our hearts uncontrollably beat and our pulses raced. We immediately screamed and jumped. "Berry and I are visiting Harlem this week, and I will tell him about you girls, and convince him to let you audition. Audit- ions will be tomorrow night at 8:00 pm, at the Apollo Theater. be there on time. Me and Berry cannot wait to see what you girls can do." "Thank you, Michael," we said. "My pleasure, girls..bye now," he said, walking away, still having his eyes focused onto me. This was the dream of a lifetime for us. We were actually going to be recognized as somebody, not only to Harlem, but eventually to the whole world.... TBC...
