Tough Love Part 60; Part 1
Chapter 60; Part 1 First Day of Thanksgiving Break â??You know, why is it that your dad is never around when I am? I havenâ??t seen him since last month!â? â??I donâ??t know. Joseph is a busy man. Heâ??s always doing some business so I donâ??t get to see him half the time now. Not like I know.â? I kinda gave up. â??Oh.â? â??Enough about my family. You know what, not enough about my family. Whatâ??s this with Thanksgiving?â? He looks and makes a right turn. I let out a quick breath. â??I just think itâ??s a great experience for yâ??all. I donâ??t know about a Jehovah because Iâ??m not one, but I think trying new things without technically breaking your codes is fine.â? His snapping tone surprised me. â??What do you have AGAINST Jehovahs?â? â??Nothing!â? I look at him. â??I mean with Christians, they are opening to sharing the faith. But Jehovahs areâ??well seems secluded. Iâ??ve been told thatâ?¦sorta but not in so many words.â? â??What nitwit told you that?â? I look at him in cold-hearted fashion. â??My grandma!â? He looks at me. I look at him. I see him start to laugh and I join a little. â??But really, itâ??ll be fun. Do thisâ?¦for me. For us.â? Guess I spoke too soon about Joseph. Once we go there, we headed straight for Katherine, who was luckily outside, but saw Joseph walking around on the phone. â??Hi Joseph!â? I say. He looks up at me and waves with his hand as he continues on the phone. I smile at him and Michael. Maybe he isnâ??t such a bad guy after all. But after we go out back and I see Katherine with a distressed look on her face, I ask her whatâ??s wrong. She looks up at me, and seems that for a second, sheâ??s going to spill but doesnâ??t. â??Sit,â? she says as she pats her beach chair. â??I think youâ??re going to want to sit for this too.â? Now what I wanted to tell her, I didnâ??t want to make a big deal because thatâ??s a big turn off for success. â??What is it?â? she looks between the two of us. â??Nothing life changing.â? I say as I take my seat. Michaelâ??s to my right. â??Okay, good to hear.â? She looked at me and I bit on my bottom lip a little. â??Wellâ??â? â??Come on Lyric just spit it out.â? Michael says. Is he still upset about me trying to understand Jehovah, the religion itself? â??Michael.â? Kate says. â??Katherine, I was thinking I can bring over a bunch of food this Thursday and you can cook a bunch here.â? â??Why?â? â??Because itâ??s Thanksgiving.â? She lets out a breath. â??For the rest of the country. Now to you Jacksons, it doesnâ??t even have to be that way.â? â??Yeah, Ma, and the rest of the family doesnâ??t even have to come.â? â??Like who Michael?â? â??Like our extended. Everyone else can come. Even Jermaine.â? Michael smiles at his mother. I think sheâ??s buying into it. â??Why, Lyric?â? â??Becauseâ?¦â? I stop right there. â??Thisâ??ll be the first Thanksgiving me and my father will experience with it just being the two of us and I need for it to be special.â? I look at her son then her. â??And I met you and your son. Itâ??ll be very special. And you donâ??t have to eat any meat if you donâ??t want to, Katherine. Itâ??ll only be reserved for me and my father.â? â??And Joseph.â? When I look at her she says â??He doesnâ??t support Jehovah as much as I need him to, so I guess theyâ??ll be meat for three or for whomever else donâ??t support Jehovah.â? She smiles. â??So is that yes?â? â??Iâ??ll talk to my son about it. Iâ??ve kept up with this for thirteen years and I donâ??t expect to forget it, so Iâ??ll see.â? Does that mean no? â??Wanna hang here anymore?â? Michael asks when we go back in the house. â??I donâ??t know. Can I see your room?â? â??Somewhere else.â? â??Then I can go home.â? And we do. The school is out for a week for Thanksgiving break. Danielle said how she had relatives to visit and the same for Sherry. On a whim, I thought about inviting Patricia, but I really didnâ??t want to deal with her dad, who has been a grouch since his separation and unofficial divorce with her mom. Pat told me at first that theyâ??ll just go to a restaurant then to a movie, but then she told us later sheâ??ll visit her mom relatives. Patricia and her mom agree to disagree but things have gotten better. She considered it being with her and her parents, but her dad STILL wonâ??t forgive her mom for running off with a younger guy so it was beyond thought at this moment. To make up for our loss Saturday night, M.J. and I had a cappuccino at Starbucks and when I got home, I took a nap until Dad wakes me up. â??Wanna go to the station with me, kiddo?â? â??Sure, why not?â? Dad would give me a few dollars whenever Iâ??d file away some of his papers, so I took him on his bet again. When we get to the station, itâ??s sometime around five, so a lot of his co-workers arenâ??t walking around anymore. â??Just sit here and do your thing.â? Dad tells me. Then he walks away in another room. He turns on the radio and I hear Donna Summer come on. I sing a little to myself and after a while, the door of the station opens from the outside. Dad walks to the door. â??Coop!â? My head pops up. â??Chief,â? Dylan Cooper smiles as they greet each other. â??Thank you for coming back.â? â??Chief, you didnâ??t even tell me to. I just happen to come back.â? â??Yep, I know.â? â??I was looking for something I think I left here.â? â??Okay, go look for it. Iâ??ll be back there. I have to finish up some things.â? â??â??Kay Chief.â? Dad walks off and when he walks away, I peek up and see that this is the first time I witness Cooper in his uniform. Partial of it, that is. Everything is in place except for his white tee, which is showing since the top half of his uniform is off. I hear his heavy boots as heâ??s walking. I try tuning Cooper out by listening to the TV. When I look up again, Cooper is standing in front of the desk. â??Hey pretty girl. How are you?â? he smiles. I look at him then away. â??Oh come on, now donâ??t be that way.â? I ignore him. â??Still donâ??t trust me and I wonder why.â? â??Well you shouldnâ??t.â? I say. â??Tell me this then, how have you been? Iâ??ve been fine if you care to know; Iâ??m just sad that I didnâ??t get to talk to you the last time I saw you. I know your friend donâ??t like me, but too damn bad. Itâ??s not about him, itâ??s about you.â? I roll my eyes. â??Do you have something to look for?â? Suddenly he walks away and when I lean over the desk, I see him looking through the blinds. When I look through the window, I see my father isnâ??t in the station anymore. Dylan walks back with a broad-closed mouth smile. He folds his arms and leans over my desk again. â??So what do you want to know about me?â? he asks. â??Why you wonâ??t leave me alone.â? â??Youâ??re a pretty girl. And Iâ??m a blessed guy I must say. I just want to talk to ya. I havenâ??t had a girl in a while, and I dig you.â? â??What kind of girls do you go for? The ones that be in bars and smoke cigarettes and is loose. Is that what you look for?â? â??I must say I have. But not anymore.â? He goes to what must be his desks and I hear him looking for things. After a few minutes of silence, Cooper walks back over to me. â??Here.â? I look at what he puts on my desk. Two tickets to a hockey game this Sunday. â??I wish it was for baseball because thatâ??ll be more impressive for a date, but apparently it isnâ??t baseball season, so I was wondering if youâ??d go.â? â??Donâ??t call it a date.â? I say. â??Plus I played hockey in high school. No need to dis the game if Iâ??ve played it before. You like hockey?â? â??Iâ??ve been to one before. Theyâ??re really rough.â? â??Yeah, and being in Canada, there IS snow, so problemo solved, but we have some of those rinks down in sunny California.â? â??Why do you want me to go?â? â??Just â??cause.â? â??â??Just â??causeâ?? isnâ??t good enough Dylan.â? I say as I stand to put away some more files. â??Okayâ?¦because donâ??t you know babe, I want to get to know you. I wonâ??t do something that is too far for you, Sunday School Girl. Itâ??s just an outing, not an engagement. Relax!â? I look at him. He looks at me, this time looking serious. â??Here, just think on itâ?¦.And this,â? he pulls out a piece of paper thatâ??s bent all up. His phone number is written in neat blue ink. â??Call me.â? he walks out backwards with a smile. â??But that wonâ??t make me want to call you.â? â??Your lost.â? After staring at the ticket for so much longer, I hid it in my pocket. I wonder, what makes Dylan Cooper so special to the point that he must take me out? Then I think faith streaks me from the sky. I see an orange bottle on Cooperâ??s desk. Thatâ??s always a sign of prescription pills. Iâ??m nosy enough to see what KIND of pills it is. Surely â??nough his name is on it, but then I read the rest of the label. Its purpose it to help for cardiac reasons. Is he sick?! Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb I KNOW not the best part, but you know Iâ??m always leading up to something. Also, I was thinking Dean could be Shane Harper who plays Spencer Walsh from "Good Luck Charlie" or Steve from "Full House". ~a. & if I canâ??t post part 42 & 56, Iâ??ll have to give a synopsis.
