Tough Love Part 47
I hope yâ??all liked the Red Carpet scene and all the others from the last parts. *Also I had learned that the second premiere was actually that party held in Michaelâ??s honor at Studio 54, so Iâ??m sorry about that. But, vote up! Youâ??ll never know whatâ??ll happen next! :) ~~ Chapter 47 After â??The Wizâ?? After Quincy sits down, I whispered to Michael that I thought we were going to be sitting in a large theater. He shook his head no. I shut my mouth then as I got nervous when I saw the credits start rolling in. People clapped and yell as they saw the stars name on the screen. Hereâ??s some highlights I saw: Diana being the shy Dorothy thatâ??s playing twenty-four, but I had heard she was thirty-four. I saw the little â??munchkinsâ?? but they were really kids. In about thirty minutes of the film, I leaned forward because I saw Michael as the Scarecrow. I saw him sharing a moment with Diana. They laughed and made a gesture. I laughed a little when I saw how the Scarecrow was walking. He had his own little bounce that was only his. Then after we meet the Lion, I think out of fear, Dorothy and the Scarecrow hold hands. They do the same, but itâ??s more obvious when they were in the Subway. Thatâ??s when I looked over at Michael, and he looked down. Another scene that brought attention was when the crew walked outside and they were being hypnotized by these dancing women. â??I couldâ??ve done that scene,â? the choreography was simple. â??I bet you couldâ??ve,â? Michael tells me but in a teasing way. An additional thing I saw was after they met the Wiz, theyâ??re sitting in this hotel room, and theyâ??re trying to figure out what to do. The Lion or Tin Man mentions them staying in an apartment, and the Scarecrow points at himself in a suggestive way. THEN another time, before they get caught by the evil witch, the Scarecrow holds Dorothy in a securing manner. If it wasnâ??t Michael that was doing the holding, or if it wasnâ??t Diana as Dorothy, it wouldnâ??t have bothered me so much. The rest of the film was fine until the end of course. The Scarecrow was really intense on what to say. â??Success, fame, and fortuneâ?¦theyâ??re all illusions. All there that is real is the friendship that two can share.â? Thatâ??s what I believe he said. At the end, Diana gives a heart-breaking performance for â??Homeâ?, and she and Toto makes it back home. After a short silence, the credits roll in again and where â??Ease on Down the Roadâ?. Everyone claps and hoot and holler. I give Michael a warm hug and kiss his cheek. â??That was beautiful!â? Then to the cast, â??All of it was beautiful! Thanks again for taking me!â? I tell him. Then I kiss his cheek again. The cast stands up from their chairs and they group up as we clapped for them. We were laughing as Richard Pryor recited his lines as he kept saying sorry. Pictures were flashing and confetti fell from the ceiling. Michael told me to stand by him, so I got in a few. He even kissed my cheek. â??Michael, are you going to stay any longer?â? someone asked. We had already danced to songs and everything! Iâ??m surprised people werenâ??t tired out just yet. â??No, I have to take her home.â? â??Why?â? â??School tomorrow,â? he tells the man. â??You can meet her again if you want, Sidney.â? Sidney Lumet was the director of the film. â??Hope I get to KEEP seeing her with you. Sheâ??s cute!â? â??Thanks,â? I giggled. â??Are you ready, Dunk?â? Michael asked Janet. â??Hey, donâ??t call me that,â? she said. â??And yeah, Iâ??m sleepy!â? So after a little, we were able to grab everyone else, and when we were about to leave, Michael was asking if I was ready to hear all the people scream again. Diana came out of nowhere. â??Bye, Michael.â? â??Bye, Di.â? Then they kissed cheeks again. When she walked away, I shook my head. â??What?â? â??Got much of a crush?â? â??Jealous much?â? â??No, not at all.â? I wasnâ??t paying attention, and I was about to walk outside beside Janet, but Michael had to get my hand before I did. â??Hey, if you go out walking like that, theyâ??ll think weâ??re mad at each other.â? â??Why?â? â??Thatâ??s just how people think.â? Everyone was still clapping for him when we got into the limo. We stopped off at Hayvenhurst, which was the first time Shaun was there. It was already after one, so we had to be heading home. Dad went in the house while Michael and I stayed on the porch. â??What do you think about the film?â? â??A grade A! I meant to tell you that you can really act. And Diana did a really good job singing â??Homeâ??. Are you going to do another movie?â? He sighs. â??Not right now. Iâ??m working on that album with my brothers, and hopefully my own. Thatâ??s why I enjoyed working on the movie so much. I didnâ??t have to worry about nobody elseâ??s control. â??Toya and I liked that. But she was more apprehensive about it.â? â??What were some of the things you did?â? â??I went out to Studio 54 a lot,â? he said with a smile. Hating to add on something that he wouldnâ??t want to hear about, I softly said, â??Yeah, Diana said that there was a party last year for you!â? â??There was.â? â??And I learned there ISNâ??T gonna be another premiere.â? I poked out my lip. â??Ohâ?¦yeah. I can still take you there, though.â? â??Why did you tell me about another premiere?â? â??I donâ??t know. I just need a good excuse so your dad wonâ??t follow you. Iâ??m sorry.â? â??Maybeâ?¦if your momâ?¦or LaToya came, he wouldnâ??t mind. Maybe on Veterans Day. Thatâ??s a prolonged weekend. We could make up something, I donâ??t know.â? â??I was just feeding myself the joy of another premiere. Just forget about the New York trip. You probably donâ??t wanna go.â? â??No, Michael, why wouldnâ??t I? I DO wanna go.â? â??You do? Still?â? â??Sure! Why not? You live only once. Not like weâ??re dating, soâ?¦no one will careâ?¦.â? â??I guess so.â? He stands up from the rail, and I go to hug him. â??See you in the morning?â? â??Hope so. You know your friends will be happy to know that you went to the premiere.â? â??God, Iâ??ve been forgetting about what people may think. Now they know I know you.â? He shrugs and holds the door for me as we go in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I felt a sense of grief as I slipped the magical clothes off. The next morning, I would be this ordinary girl all over again. I was only asked to be with Michael out of convenience, but now Iâ??m just plain â??ole Lyric. Oh wellâ?¦. Though I felt pinned to the bed, I got up anyway. My alarm clock just went off, and I decided to ride the bus to play it safe. For all I know, if I try riding with Michael, theyâ??ll speculate if heâ??s in the car, so I dragged on a t-shirt and a sweater. I got on the bus as it started to rain harder. How ironic when last night was the complete opposite. â??Was that really YOU?â? I kept getting. I would just say yeah, and when they wanted me to explain, I just said itâ??s a long story. I was already not in the mood because I failed to realize people would stare at me all day. Things kept getting bizarre the whole day, and I had to be escorted by a cop. And it was on a newspaperâ??s stand that I saw the title, â??MICHAELâ??S MYSTERY GIRL!â? in all bold. Another said â??AS MICHAEL JACKSON ESCORTS THIS UNKNOWN GIRL TO â??THE WIZâ??â?¦â?. My guidance counselor hounded me again about him. â??Iâ??m telling you, I went with him, and thatâ??s all.â? â??Somethingâ??s wrong?â? she asks. â??No.â? â??Then why are you sad, now?â? â??Because people I donâ??t even know at this school knows me! Theyâ??re judging me now.â? â??No they arenâ??t. Just keep your head up, Lyric. Youâ??ve got me.â? â??Well, I hope so. The way some folks are looking at me is really getting to me,â? after she doesnâ??t say anything, I tell her Iâ??m leaving. As Iâ??m walking out the guidance room, I bump into someone. I look up and see Donovan. I wasnâ??t paying attention and he was holding a lot of equipment. â??Hey,â? I said as I help him grab his things. He looks up at me for a second, then he looks away and picks his things up. â??Hey, donâ??t be bitter, Don.â? He stops what heâ??s doing and his eyes grow narrow. â??Really, Iâ??M bitter? So you left me for some punk, Michael Jaâ?? â??Donovan, Michaelâ??s no punk.â? â??Yeah, and I bet you left me for him.â? I rolled my eyes. â??Donovan, I didnâ??t leave you for NO ONE! Remember, you wanted to go and do what you did with your ex. Remember THAT? You had me waiting for you, and you chose herâ?¦over ME! DONâ??T talk to me again.â? I slammed his things on the tiles, grabbed my stuff, and stomped away. I hear him sigh and yell at the same time. Then I hear him run up to me. â??Lyric, stop,â? he grabbed my arm. I yanked it away, he grabbed me closer. â??Stop, come on.â? he says. â??Look, Iâ??m trying to forgive you. Donâ??t make it worse.â? I pulled my arm away again because I didnâ??t know what else to do. I look back at him once again as he just stands there in frustration. He and I were called in one of the vice-principalâ??s office. â??Lyric Swanâ?¦Donovan Cooperâ?¦care to explain?â? We didnâ??t say anything for a moment. I hear Donovan swallow, then he starts. â??I was shielded by my drums and Lyric bumped into me.â? â??What was all that ruckus for?â? â??What it sounded like to you, sir?â? â??Are you being funny, Donovan?â? â??No, sir. I just want to make sure,â? â??Sounded like yâ??all were screaming.â? â??She got a little hurt from the collision. Maybe sheâ??s just tired, but it wasnâ??t her fault.â? He just shakes his head and lets us off free. â??Pay attention to what yâ??all are doing.â? Donovan was the first out the room. As I followed him out, I could tell he was still grieving â??usâ?. Our paths would be opposite, but I couldnâ??t leave a wounded puppy like that, so I didnâ??t. â??Donovan,â? I walked to him, â??Thank you,â? I whispered. He looks down upon me. â??It was nothing,â? he bites down on his jaw. Donnie touches my arm and he looks like heâ??s gonna kiss me. Instead he goes for my nose I think, but we hear the door behind us open. The vice-principal clears his throat and Donovan looks up. He looks down again and search for my eyes. He backs away and turns from us. I look at the man for a brief second, and head to my class without a pass. Michael greets me and my father at the door once I get home from school. â??How was yâ??alls day?â? â??Hectic,â? I say. â??And it wants to brighten up right after school ends. Huuugh,â? I sighed. â??Care to talk about it?â? â??I donâ??t knowâ?¦I donâ??t know.â? â??Is that guy still mad at you?â? â??WHAT guy?â? Dad asks. Oh Godâ?¦Michael. â??This other guy who thought about going somewhere with meâ?¦.â? â??Where? And who?â? â??Donovanâ?¦to the ball. But I didnâ??t wanna.â? I was lucky enough to escape his other possible questions. Michael was out tonight, so it was Dad and I. We just happened to be sitting on Michaelâ??s â??bedâ?; which is really the couch or sofa-bed. â??I didnâ??t get to ask you, but how did you feel last night?â? â??Like a PRINCESS! Dad, I was in the fast lane.â? â??That I donâ??t like.â? â??And I sorta donâ??t either. This morning I had a total crash.â? â??You feel that you can get used to this?â? â??Used to what?â? â??Going to places with Michael and stuff. Being seen public.â? â??No,â? I started shaking my head and giggled. â??I donâ??t think Iâ??ll ever be.â? â??Why?â? â??Becauseâ?¦I feel stripped of privacy almost. I mean, I enjoyed the cameras, but after that, I felt a little weird. I guess I know how they feelâ?¦.â? â??Remember when you wanted that to be you? For you to be the famous one?â? â??Yeah, for my work. Not because I was on Michael Jacksonâ??s arm.â? â??Then do SOMETHING to be his competition,â? he smirked. â??Iâ??m NO threat to Michaelâ??s talent. He practically lives and breathes his â??craftâ??â?. I emphasized the word craft with my fingers. â??Have you study his moves? Up close and stuff?â? â??Yeah, a little. But have I been to a studio with him and practiced, noâ?¦.â? â??Well maybe tomorrow you can sharpen your moves for the ball on Saturday.â? When I looked like why he was granting me permission to do this, he says, â??My choice. Just be home by seven, SHARP! No exceptions Lyr, or Iâ??m coming out with myâ??â? â??Donâ??t say IT!â? I fussed. â??NOT like I was gonna say it,â? he says with a smile. After some silence, I ask Dad about Sonny. â??Weâ??re still trying to find the guy who did it. We KNOW it was some dude who sells drugs.â? He shakes his head, â??the things people do these daysâ?¦.â? â??Did youâ?¦â? â??Nearly was shot? I guess because this job is just dangerous. But Sonny wasnâ??t cautious. Every cop KNOWS that. Now I have to have another partner â??cause heâ??s healing.â? â??Whatâ??s his name?â? â??Or hers?â? I frowned. â??Kidding, but his name is Gibby.â? I busted out laughing. â??Shortened for Gibson.â? â??Why not just say that?â? â??â??Cause I saw it in his school year book.â? â??How long ago was that?â? He laughed. â??But he is one serious-son-of-a-gun.â? â??Know you like that.â? â??No, heâ??s TOO serious sometimes. But at least he has his head together.â? â??Yeah,â? then I hug him. Iâ??m heading upstairs to shower when Dad calls out to me. â??Yes?â? â??You know your momâ??s birthday is this Saturday? The 28th remember?â? â??I remember EVERYONEâ??S birthday. Iâ??ll call to tell her happy birthday.â? Then I walk away. Mom or Angela, whichever one you wanna say, is turning thirty-six. Yep, my parents ARE fairly young. Dad is thirty-eight. â??Michael, can you take me to one of your studioâ??s tomorrow after school? We might be able to sharpen up some moves for Saturday.â? â??SURE!â? He looked thrilled. He looked like he would possibly kiss my cheek, but he second-guesses himself. I clamp my hands to my hip and sneer. â??Guess someone is nervous tonight?â? â??I just get nervous around pretty ladies.â? He says as he walks around me. I turn so I can keep my eye on him. â??And yes, Iâ??ll take you.â? â??Sweet!â? I was prepared the next day. I brought a bag of clothes I would wear to gym and I drunk water the previous night. Michael told me to meet him at â??the cornerâ? nearby my school. He didnâ??t want to be spotted. And I KNEW why he would say something like that once I saw the limo on the road and it stopped in front of me. I shook my head a little exasperated. I think I like it better when MICHAEL takes me places, not his body guard or whatever he is, Bill Bray. â??Get IN!â? I hear Michael exclaim in his friendly tone. The window is down a little, and if youâ??re lucky, you can see his cheeks, nose, and mouth. He opens the door for me and pulls my hand. Heâ??s moving his feet around, dancing to the radio. â??Guess youâ??re already ready, hunh?â? I ask with a grin. â??Whatâ??cha mean?â? â??I mean that you must already be ready to dance. ALREADY!â? â??Whatâ??chu just said maid no sense, Lyric.â? He says with a laugh. â??I KNOW! I started to notice that, so I just went with it.â? â??OH!â? he says. I have to admit that both Michael and I was grooving in the backseat. He decides he wants to sing, so I let life take me for a spin and I let loose and sing too. â??You know what you even singing about?â? â??Yep,â? I say. â??Boy, Iâ??d rather be with YOOUU,â? Iâ??m singing Bootsyâ??s â??Iâ??d Rather Be With Youâ?. â??And his birthday was yesterdayâ?¦â? I say. â??Ainâ??t that somethinâ???â? â??How you know?â? â??I memorize peopleâ??s birthdays. Itâ??s my gift,â? I smile. â??Well say, Momâ??s is May 4th. I wonâ??t reveal her age because she may not like that. Think you can remember â??dat?â? â??Yep,â? I say as Iâ??m grooving with the end of the song. We simply go to the same Epic studio and as Iâ??m trying to take my gym bag in, Michael looks at me. â??Youâ??re taking that in? Leave your stuff in here, Bill isnâ??t gonna steal.â? â??Hey, that rhymes!â? I giggle, â??But my other clothes are in here.â? â??Oh, so you think you gonna win, now?â? â??Win what, a dancing competition with you? That wasnâ??t a part of the agendaâ?¦.â? â??Hmm,â? he says as he looks behind me. I actually think at me AND my behind! I wouldâ??ve hit him jokingly, but I didnâ??t mind, so we walked in together. â??Go in that bathroom down there,â? he says as he points my way. â??Thanks,â? I say. â??Ohâ?¦.Myâ?¦.Gosh! You has gotta be KIDDINâ?? ME!â? I sorta yell. HOW do I FORGET LOTION?! UGGH! Either way, I walk out there, bare ashy legs. That was probably the first thing Michael sees. But I brought some attention to it also when I said, â??Donâ??t stare.â? â??At what,â? then he looks down and cracks up. â??Shut-Up!â? I say in a comical and swift way. He only shakes his head again. â??Sorry I have no lotion, but look, Iâ??m about to dance in my JEANS! Thatâ??s worse.â? â??You donâ??t care thoughâ?¦.Better yet, it doesnâ??t matter for you. You can dance in whatever.â? â??Okay then, letâ??s proceed.â? Michael turns on the radio in the studio. â??I guess itâ??s okay to dance to whatever may come on. Get us used to ANYTHING.â? â??You know they gonna be conservative. Itâ??s a ballâ?¦for the MAYOR!â? â??Oh, heâ??ll be more astonished to see me,â? he says with a smile. The first thing that happened to come on was â??Yesterdayâ? by The Beatles. We stretch as we I listen to it. Michael softly sings it. â??Casanova,â? I mumble. â??Whatever,â? he nudges me as we stand up. â??Come on!â? he grunts as another slow paced song comes on. Itâ??s â??Right on Timeâ? by The Brothers Johnson. It was released the previous year. â??Well come on, we donâ??t have all night.â? I said as I start to move around. Of course in a sorta suggestive way since the song was slow. When you dance like that, you convince people, so that was what I was doing. I was persuading Michael to dance like he should. He walks around me in a circle. He spins, claps while he throws his head back, and moves his pelvisâ?¦AGAIN! â??I know. That drives you nuts,â? he says. I only shake my head. Then I dance in front of him, but really close. He giggles. I turn around and say sorry. But he says â??Un-uhâ? and grabs my waist and turns me back around. Yeah, thereâ??s air between us, but that probably made things worse. Following the end of the song, Michael tells me, â??You know, Quincy has worked with them.â? I knew what he meant immediately when he says Quincy, but I just want to make sure. â??The manâ??â? â??Yeah, the one you met the other night.â? â??Oh. Heâ??s like a father figure.â? â??I know.â? Michael smiles. â??And Iâ??ve been thinking about asking him who I should work with if I EVER get my album off the ground.â? â??Have you even started?â? â??Huhh,â? he grumbles under his breath. â??I WISH! Lyric, Iâ??m still working on the one with my brothers. I have no time to be â??selfishâ??.â? â??Youâ??re not selfish.â? â??But Iâ??m different.â? Then he gets up to another song and start dancing. We even had a few dance rounds of competition, but I believe the staff was just lying when they kept saying I was the better dancer. I probably looked like a chicken doing a voodoo dance! But I became his TRUE dancing partner when slow songs like The Beatles â??Hey Judeâ? came on. It was so funny because it was a sad song, and Michael was playing the part. â??Hey Lyr,â? he would say instead. But he didnâ??t know all the words, so he mumbled probably seventy percent of it. He got the â??nanasâ? though, like I did. â??Heeey, Mike,â? I said. â??Hey, you said it again.â? He says with a smile. Some spectacular highlights are that throughout The Beatles song, we tried different things. I would run up to him, and he would try to catch me. Since the radio happened to play the full version of â??Hey Judeâ?, we had plenty of time. When it finally went off, Michael said that quote-on-quote, â??I would like to be as big as them one day. The records we havenâ??t broken are because of The Beatles.â? End-quote. I told him he could do it. â??What time is it?â? he says though he turns toward the clock. â??6:28, letâ??s get going.â? He dashes to get my bag and weâ??re moving out of Epic pretty fast. â??Punch it, Bray,â? he says. â??Michael, youâ??re such a dramatic,â? I say with a laugh. â??I also wished we had stopped to get a treat or something before we got to the studio.â? â??Michael, we wouldâ??ve been dancing soon. That wouldnâ??t have been great,â? I said with a little sarcasm. He shakes his head. We get home at a slippery time of six fifty-five. â??How will we know when itâ??s seven?â? I asked. Well, we waited until we saw the porch lights come on. Mustâ??ve been at seven. Michael automatically rings the doorbell. Dad answers. â??Had a good time? Accomplished anything?â? â??Yep,â? I say. Okay, so we didnâ??t go by the STRICT guidelines Dad wouldâ??ve loved, but when do we EVER do EXACTLY what he intends us to do. â??Show me some moves,â? he says. Of COURSE! I havenâ??t even gotten in the room too good, yet. Iâ??m sure Michael hadnâ??t either, but we think of something to do once Dad turns the radio on. â??We even tried to get Lyric to run up to me and jump in my arms during â??Hey Judeâ??.â? â??Oh God,â? Dad mumbles. â??Lyr, donâ??t forget to call your granddaddy. His bithdayâ??s today.â? â??Okay,â? I say. I have a few family members born in the ripe month of October as you can see! As Iâ??m talking to him, â??Hey Judeâ? lyrics are in my mind. Well the ones I can remember. â??Bye Grandaddy Clifford.â? â??Talk to you later, Lyric.â? Then we hang up. Heâ??s my motherâ??s father. Cool isnâ??t? His birthday, then hers. â??Guess Iâ??ll see you in the morning, Soul Sister. Youâ??re ready?â? â??Nottt even,â? I tell Michael. In truth, I stayed up that night, just watching TV, in my room for a change. But as I laid on my back, and then my stomach, all I thought about WAS Michael. His shy spirit. Does he like me? ~~ Wow, heart-breaker, isnâ??t it? Luvs Aariyan.
