Late November 1995...
So much has happened over the course of this year. From utter joy to extreme disappointment and there he stood. A man with his life dream shattered. There he stood on the bridge overlooking his lake at sunset. The colors of orange purple and red streaked across the water. Michael had been out there most of the day, reflecting, letting his tears fall into the water. Watching the ripples fade away as he stared into the lake at Neverland. His face was in despair as he remembered the argument between he and Lisa earlier in the day. *** "...Michael I just can not do this anymore ok?? You cant keep punishing me for what happened to our baby." "Hear me out! I'm not trying to..I understand now that it her time. I just wanted to keep my mind off of her. I wasn't trying to neglect you...PLEASE don't do this!" "I don't want to but I have to. You're more married to your career than me! How often do I see you anymore? I see that damn nurse around you more than anybody." Michael grew quiet."I can't afford to cut back on my schedule. I have to promote this album with everything that I have. How many time have I offered for you to fly with me and you chose to stay?" "Michael I have CHILDREN! I can't just pick up and go as if I didn't. And they're in school also?" Michael became tearful as he tried to reach out for Lisa. Lisa abruptly pulls away. Michael tried to hide his hurt by looking in another direction. "I just think we need to go our separate ways for awhile..." **** Her words echoed in his mind over and over again. Like knives slicing into his soul. After spending some hours over that lake, Michael retreated indoors. All of the employees had gone home to their families by this time so Michael was all alone. He wandered to the kitchen just as the phone began to ring. "Hello?" "Hey Mike. This is Debb." "Oh...Hey." "How's married life treating ya?" Silence. "Michael?" He sighs. "I'm still here. Things aren't looking too good for me." "Well you know I'm here for you. What happened? Y'all fought??" "Worse. She wants to separate." He says as tears stream down his face. "I KNOW this isn't what we need and I KNOW she's the one. I want to be with her Debbie, you know this." "You're kidding? What made her do this?" "She thinks that ever since the miscarrage a few months back, I don't make time for her. She thinks I put my career over her. I wouldn't try and avoid her on purpose, but I want a child so badly and I just didn't know how to handle something like that. So I just dove head first into my work. I attempted to balance it out you know?" "But to her, it looked like you were shutting her out..." "I suppose so.." Michael sniffles in the background. "Mike? You say you want a kid? Then why don't you have one? You could adopt or something to that effect." "Yea I'm aware of my options, but I wanted my first child to be MY child. Flesh and blood and all that stuff." "Then do it." "What are you talking about? Did you not hear the part where I said Lisa wants to separate? I can't have a child with her if she doesn't want to be around me right now." "I'll carry the child Michael. Nobody has to know and you can consider it a gift, you know, for all the times you've provided for me." Debbie suggested warmly. "Debbie I want children and that is an interesting gesture of 'friendship' but my marriage is falling apart! You can't be serious about what you just said." "I'm not trying to be insensitive to you. I know the situation. Just saying if you want this then I'm willing to do this for you, as a friend. I'm very serious." December 1995 Lisa had moved back into her Hidden Hills home in Los Angeles while Michael had been practicing very hard for his upcoming HBO concert. His heavy heart was causing him to neglect his health. He refused barely eat, but he continued to spend long hours rehearsing. It was his way of taking his mind off of his troubles. From the miscarriage, Lisa, Debbie... Last month, after much debate and persuasion, he took Debbie up on her offer. She was pregnant, but Michael wasn't in the celebrating mood. He hasn't informed Lisa that he cheated. Knowing fully well what he had done was the final nail in their coffin called marriage. Its heavy on his mind as he makes his spin. He started to belt out the second verse to 'Man in the Mirror'. He took one step back before everything seemed to go in slow motion. His eyes rolled back and the mic fell from his hand. Michael exhales before his body goes limp. Some of the crew screams for help as Michael's body hit the floor. Hysteria breaks out. Some hours had passed since Michael's trauma. The nurses come and go to check his IV's and vitals. At Beth Israel Hospital, every type of tube is hooked to him. His mother and Rebbie flew out as soon as they heard. Lisa did as well. She was nervous wreck on the flight from Los Angeles. Everybody had been keeping vigil by his bedside. Lisa was holding his hand, stroking his fingers. She leaned in to lay her head on his chest. Hearing his heart beat sort of comforts her from thinking he's going to pass away. "Lisa we're gonna go get something to drink. If he comes to, tell him we're here." Janet said as she and Rebbie left and Katherine stroked Michael's hair. Lisa silently cried on Michael as she looks at all the tubes coming out of him. "Dont die like this...please..." She says before she started sobbing loudly. Katherine was saying prayer by his head, hoping her son would awaken. More hours pass before Michael begins to show signs that he's ok. The day turned into night and then into day. The phone was unplugged for the night. Lisa had fallen asleep on his chest while the rest of the family left a few hours before to go back to their hotel rooms. The sun began to peak through the blinds made Michael stir, causing Lisa to wake up as well. "Don't..Just lay there." "What happened to me?" He says weakly. "They tell me you were on stage and you collapsed. They also tell me you haven't been eating. What the hell were you trying to do? Kill yourself??" "That was my way of trying to excape all of this. I wasn't trying to die. I just didn't have an appetite and yea it was stupid..." "You think? You scared me Michael!" "I'm sorry. I have a lot on my mind and a lot that I need to say to you. It's eating me alive." "You wanna tell me now? Before you go out and collapse again?." "You'll leave me if I tell you." Michael thinks to himself. Just then Katherine, Rebbie and Janet return, nearly spilling their drinks in excitement. "Oh God! I want to hug you Mike, but I'm afraid I might pull out something." Janet said. "I'm sure you won't Jan.." Katherine said as she made her way over to her son. "Don't you ever as long as you live...scare me like this again Michael. You have to take care of yourself." "I know mother..." Mid December... Michael recovered and reluctantly had to cancel is concert. He returned to Los Angeles with Lisa, but he was staying in his condo. The guilt of his secret was eating him alive. "Lisa?" "Hey you..what's up?" "We need to talk..I..I can't elaborate over the phone, but I need to see you and talk to you today. Can I stop by?" Michael asked shakily. "Um..sure. You wanna give me a hint about it? Am I gonna like what you have to say?" Lisa smiled. "No you won't. In fact I'm sure you won't. I'm on my way.." He said before slowly hanging up. He paced his room until he almost burned a hole in the ground. He felt nauseas and queasy all at the same time. This wasn't an easy task to accomplish. He didn't know if Lisa would fly off the handles or just take it all in. After much consideration, he finally grabs his keys and head for the door.
