Tough Love (1979) Part 8
Chapter 8 Sweet Tooth Right before I went to call Nick, I remembered how late it was and opted not to do it. But I woke up to a phone call. â??Nick is calling.â? â??Thanks Mike,â? I grab the phone. â??Hello?â? â??Hey sweetie. I was going to invite you to go to the new Ben & Jerryâ??s. A few of us wanted to try it out. You know how some of us usually go to Dairy Queen? Well we were going to the new spot in town around seven tonightâ?¦.Wanna go?â? â??â?¦Umm..sure. Whoâ??s all going?â? The way he paused seemed like he was saying â??Why does it matter?â? but luckily I didnâ??t hear it. â??Donovan, the girls, some other people.â? â??Yeah, Iâ??ll join yâ??all.â? As soon as I got off the phone, I called Sherry. When she didnâ??t answer, I called Pat. â??Yeah, â??sup?â? I told her about Ben & Jerryâ??s. â??Think you can get me there and back?â? â??Sure.â? Then I called Nick back. The reason for this is that I didnâ??t want him picking me up again. Thatâ??ll look suspicious and tip off Dad. He already wants to know about every guy I have ever spoken to, â??Hey, Iâ??m glad you called me back. I meant to tell you Iâ??d scoop you up.â? â??No thatâ??s fine Nick. Patricia is going to do that for me.â? â??Okay. Well see you when you get there.â? I wore my a plain white shirt, the sports jacket Michael had given me, and my black boots. â??And youâ??re just eating ice-cream?â? â??Yes Dad, with friends.â? â??Which ones?â?â? I told him about the ones I knew. â??Hmm, okay.â? â??You look hot tonight.â? â??Just being me,â? I sheepishly smile. â??Hello!â? I screamed then turned around. â??Austin, what are you doing back here?â? â??Told you itâ??d work Pat,â? then he kisses her cheek as she blushes. â??What work?!â? â??He wanted to see if someone would sit right here so he could scare them.â? â??Why arenâ??t you driving your jeep?â? I turn on him. â??Because in our relationship thatâ??s how it works.â? I rolled my eyes but instantly got nervous once we got to Ben & Jerryâ??s. â??By the way Lyric, how has it been going with you and Michael Jackson?â? â??We havenâ??t hung out in a while.â? And in truth, it really feels like we havenâ??t. Iâ??ve been out and about for the past two days. I got out the car and we walked up to our group of friends. As I saw Nicholas, I was thinking, â??Damn, he just reinvents himself.â? Tonight he has his hair back with a thick black headband, a gray shirt with a red and black flannel shirt, jeans, and some brown loafers. I did my best to avert my eyes from his. And that wasnâ??t so hard because when Nick said only a few other people, thatâ??s what I believed, but as I looked around his parentsâ??s jeep, I saw a few people from the football and cheerleading teams. But I got nervous as I saw some of the people from the basketball and baseball team. You should know why. I mean at my school, the athletic social hierarchy goes like this: the baseball players usually get treated with the upmost respect (at least thatâ??s what Iâ??ve heard from the other teams as they complained about the others getting to go to homeroom late and such). Then itâ??s the football players (of course), then the basketball playersâ??or so I guess. I just knew that if all of them are here, then M.J. has got to be here too. While I was in my daydream, I overhear Nick saying, â??Well I guess I gotta say it againâ??here goes the Famous Four. Turning heads wherever they go.â? When I finally look at Nickâ??s eyes, he smiles when he sees he has my attention. A lot of these people, I donâ??t even talk to. Iâ??m not a part of a sport this year, and I still have problems communicating with guys and girls who are looked upon as â??coolâ?. â??Who are we still waiting on?â? A girl from the basketball team says. Nick and Donovan look around. â??I guess no one,â? Nick replies, and everyone heads towards the Ben & Jerryâ??s. Iâ??m happy that they had this place built big enough to hold a group of rowdy teenagers. Pat nudged me when she saw Kristen, the redhead from the volleyball team faking over Donovan. I shrugged my shoulder then looked at the menu, glad that Iâ??ve been to one of these before with my dad. I decide on Cookie Dough flavor again. When I went to get my wallet out, I feel someone stand next to me. â??Un-uh, I can get it. What is it you want anyway? I was thinking of aâ?¦strawberry milkshake.â? â??You know what, Iâ??ll try something for a change too. Get me a strawberry milkshake.â? â??What size?â? â??Medium.â? â??Thanks. If you can, just pick out a table for us to sit,â? then he winks. I sit with Nick and my friends while the guys order the ice-cream. â??I see Prodigy is here,â? I smile. â??Yeah, Iâ??m trying to bring him around the friends now. I really like him,â? then Dani smiles as she looks in his area with a longing look. â??I also saw Roc Royal,â? then I tipped my head towards Sherry. â??I mean yeah, I invited him.â? When we still stared at her she says, â??Whaaat, we hit off last night! What can I say?â? Prodigy and Danielle ended up sitting with some girls from the volleyball team, while Nick and I stayed put at the same table. Things were going fine, and I made sure he didnâ??t sit too close to me. The most he did was put a generous arm around me, but I didnâ??t sit right under him, so we didnâ??t look suspicious. â??Ayyee, looks like the best man has showed up last.â? â??What Jerome?â? He didnâ??t answer as he got up from the booth, and at the entrance, I see him greet M.J. I immediately scoot from Nick some more. Instead of greeting everyone immediately, he goes to get his order, and once he does, he barely looks at me for one second and goes sit at another table. I donâ??t know how we got on the subject, but people began to get up from their seats and would switch around. Some guys sat at our table and began to talk about out of all things, teenage pregnancy. â??I donâ??t know, I just think that if you do get a girl pregnant while in high school, and in my case, an athlete, well that should push you further to succeed in college so the girl can know youâ??re serious about helping her out. You gotta put on a brave face,â? Cypress, a guy from the baseball team says. â??I donâ??t know, but then you get a girl like Saleisha Sims, and not like sheâ??s the nicest girl. She knew what she was doing when she was doing it,â? another guy named Bobby said. â??I donâ??t know,â? Cypress shoots back. â??Hey M.J.â? he was walking by our table when Bobby stops him. â??I have a question brother, come sit with us. Your girlfriend sat at Saleisha Simsâ??s table at the Holiday Social, right?â? M.J. looks over at me. â??Yeah.â? â??What do you think about Saleisha?â? â??What, her pregnancy?â? â??Yeah.â? â??I know sheâ??s young, but sheâ??ll be a good mom. I grew up with Saleisha and knows she has good instincts.â? â??What if it was Lyric?â? Bobby points at me. â??Whoa, donâ??t put me in it.â? â??Yeah Bobby, WATCH it.â? â??Iâ??m just sayinâ??. Youâ??re so cool and down to earth about it when itâ??s Saleisha, but if YOU were in the position.â? â??Then me and Lyric will do what weâ??d have to, but it wouldnâ??t be out in the streets like this.â? â??But you canâ??t hide a pregnancy.â? â??I mean the details about how weâ??d take care of the child and you sure as hell wouldnâ??t know about the ugly struggles weâ??d go through.â? When I make eye contact with him, he seemed very passionate about what he was saying. â??Well good thing she isnâ??t,â? Nick smiles. â??Yeah, way to throw me under the bus Bobby!â? â??Hey I didnâ??t mean it, I just wanted to hear what a real guy would say if he was really in that position.â? â??Well next time, donâ??t put me in it.â? Then I give him a not-so-sweet smile. As I look around the room, I see Donovan at the same table as he impressed the girls with his volleyball skills. Donovan looks over at our table, and Kristen leans over and gives him a kiss. By the time they were done and he looked back over to me, I had my head leaned on Nickâ??s shoulder temporarily, and engaged more into the silly conversation that had taken place. â??I know, thatâ??s what Iâ??m saying Gabby,â? I acted as if I was really paying attention the whole time. â??Oh yes I CAN drop it like itâ??s hot. Look!â? Nick gets up and tells the girls at our table to hold me down. At first I didnâ??t know what they were talking about, but when they got a grip on me, I immediately knew. â??Hey, get off of me!â? â??Stop all that yelling Lyric. Youâ??ll get the manager on us. Play some stripper music Ramona.â? As the girls giggled, Ramona put a quarter in the jukebox and Bootsy Collins came on. As â??Iâ??d Rather Be With Youâ? crooned, Nick found his rhythm with the music. But he took it to another level when he started mouthing the words â??Iâ??d rather be with you-ouu, yeaahâ?. â??Please Nick, stop.â? He did the speaking part, but when the chorus came on again, he started thrusting his pelvis. I kept trying to wriggle through the grips, but those girls were strong! Then he started popping during the â??Maybe the next timeâ? part in the song. â??Put your shirt back on!â? he started waving his flannel shirt around in the air. By now, there was no hope for me. Most of everyone from school that showed up surrounded us now. When the chorus came on again, Nick grabbed my face. Then he did Bootsyâ??s speaking part as he directed everyone else to go left-and-right. Then he flings his headband in the crowd as he bows to crowdâ??s applauds. â??See, THATâ??S how you get a womanâ??s attention. *Iâ??ll be your lollipop. You can lick me everywhere.â? Then he leans in and gives me a kiss. Nick follows his shallow-ass moves by walking away like heâ??s a badass. â??Dude, I thought that was your woman,â? I kept hearing the guys ask M.J. I couldnâ??t take the humiliation, so I ran to the bathroom. I wouldnâ??t get up until Danielle, Patricia, and Sherry assured me it was safe to let them in. â??I didnâ??t know he was going to do that.â? â??We know,â? say Dani. â??And like we said, Nick likes you.â? Says Sherry. â??I think he was just being a playboy.â? â??But you can come back out. The coast is clear. We defended YOU.â? Pattie says with a smile. â??Thanks you guys,â? I feel better, and wipe my eyes again. â??Just play it off,â? Danielle says. â??Looks like the princess is okay.â? â??Yeah, and we said if Nick does that again, weâ??d kick his ass.â? And this is coming from DANIELLE. She never cuss unless sheâ??s that mad. I was happy when people started to leave. Nick kept assuring people he was just being a flirt. But I stayed in my cocoon shell. That was until I saw him heading towards the bathroom, and while everyone else was occupied I slipped in step after him. I went in after him so no one else would catch me waiting for him. I quickly checked to make sure we were the only ones in there. â??What the hell do you think youâ??re doing? No one is suppose to know!â? â??Lyric, what are you doing in here?!â? â??Why did you kiss me in-front of them? Why would you even do that to me?â? â??Lyric, I was just joking okay. Give me some room, I gotta use the bathroom.â? â??No.â? Then as he used the urinal, I just stood there, waiting for him to finish. â??Are you ready now to talk?â? â??Look, I miss you, and if I offended you, Iâ??m sorry.â? â??Did you do it because my ex was there?â? â??Him? No, he wasnâ??t my motivation. My girlfriends exes donâ??t make me want to do anything. I donâ??t acknowledge them,â? he says as he washes his hands and looks in the mirror. â??I THOUGHT we werenâ??t together.â? â??Yeah, keep tellinâ?? yourself that Alaric. But not to sound like an ass, you werenâ??t saying that the early morning of January 1st Lyric. We were â??oneâ??.â? I roll my eyes and step on his foot. â??What was that for?â? â??Youâ??re, youâ??re SUCH anâ?¦.â? â??I know, ass.â? â??No,â? I keep getting more frustrated. â??Donâ??t cry babe.â? I look up at his encouraging eyes, then go to kiss him. He happily accepts. Then after I make sure the bathroom door is locked, I press him against the door and kiss him in the mouth. â??Well we kind of blew off tonight. What about tomorrow?â? I look down, then I whisper, â??I donâ??t know Nicky. But Iâ??ll call you and tell you. I might have to spend tomorrow with my dad.â? Luckily I bite my lip and donâ??t mention Michaelâ??s name. â??Okay,â? then his hands creeps down to my behind and he pulls up a little, which oddly enough at this time, causes me to laugh. â??We only have a week left. Letâ??s make the most of it.â? â??Well we canâ??t go to the beach.â? â??Why?â? â??We already did that,â? I reminded him. â??Wellâ?¦â? â??What?!â? â??There ARE other ways to spend time together.â? I lightly hit his arm. â??Iâ??m not even thinking that. See you ALWAYS think I have my mind in the gutter.â? When I look at him, he gets that mischievous grin again. â??See, thatâ??s why I donâ??t trust you.â? then I smile and kiss him one more time. â??Make sure youâ??re being careful while leaving.â? â??I am,â? I tell him as my hand slips through his. When I go back to the table, Iâ??m still afraid that Iâ??m not out of trouble, and feel even worse when Nick comes back out. It seemed like the group was still looking for SOMEone. When two girls from the softball team came out of the bathroom, thatâ??s when everyoneâ??s attention shifted again. â??We were trying to make sure yâ??all were fine.â? â??Yeah, Lucy was having cramps,â? I heard one of them say. Much to my disappointment, M.J. still hadnâ??t left, so I couldnâ??t even glance at Nick without feeling bad. That means that when it was time for me to leave, I couldnâ??t even hug him or the others like normal because I had to act weirded out by him; I didnâ??t want anything to do with Donovan; therefore I didnâ??t care to give Jerome a real goodbye. But I did laugh when I saw how much cash Nick racked up from his â??performanceâ?, and how the employees looked at us once we left. â??Lyric, you got something else through the mail. I hadnâ??t opened it.â? â??Thank you Dad.â? I sit at the kitchen table and read it. â??Your hair is charming I adore the way you throw those fits Your curves are alarming But youâ??re charming in every bit â??You donâ??t know the real me And I know itâ??s all my fault But if we were together, oh how sweet it would be But if weâ??re together, youâ??ll be taught Together weâ??re fly Youâ??re amazing Lyric Youâ??re my beautiful Myric And Iâ??m sorry if Iâ??ve ever made you cry We fit together like a glove And if you take me, Iâ??ll swear Iâ??ll show all my love And itâ??s not just about sex Iâ??d never want you to be my exâ? Wow, a Shakespearean sonnet; well somewhat. Three quatrains and two couplets are too much so whoever this is is a rule-breakerâ?¦and pretty damn bold for the second to last line. Hmmâ?¦I wonder. â??Lyric?â? I jump but when I see itâ??s Michael, Iâ??m a bit relieved. â??Yeah?â? â??Wanna play Scrabble?â? Scrabble? The last time we played was at his house. â??Uh, sure Michael.â? Dad had already went upstairs, so I yawned and stretched out before sitting on a pillow on the floor. â??You can get your shower out the way if you want first,â? He says. â??No, this is fine.â? Playing Scrabble with Michael didnâ??t stay quiet the WHOLE time. In fact, when he started asking me what went on, I told him the positive stuff, but stayed away from things like what Nick did. â??Plus based off my absence from the house in the past two days, I wouldnâ??t be surprised if Dad wanted me to stay home.â? â??Oh Lyric!â? â??Yes Dad?!â? Just like Zeus. â??Weâ??re going to church tomorrow!â? I could use the salvation. â??Okay.â? â??Guess you know your father inside-out.â? â??And guess I need to go to bed soon too. Good night Michael.â? I give him a hug and when I pull away, he holds on a little more. When I look at him, he looks like thereâ??s something on his mind, but knowing Michael, heâ??d only tell me when heâ??s ready. While taking my shower after midnight that night, I have flashes back to the evening beforeâ??how I stood by Nick, but then I CANâ??T help thinking of M.J. FINALLY not being aggressiveâ??and how I kind of liked that. NO, how I ADMIRE that from him. But then his trip with his familyâ??who I donâ??t know that well. Me and his sister donâ??t get along that way, and to be honest, his dad gives me the creeps. So M.J.â??s BEST ally, other than himself, is his mom, Dorothy. When I went back stairs to get the somewhat Shakespearean sonnet, I read it againâ??really trying to figure out if itâ??s Nick voice coming through. Then I eye the roses that are still on the table. I meant to move those, but had forgotten to. I pick one out of the vase, smell it, then put it back in the glass. â??Hmm, I wonder.â? â??Lyric?â? â??Yeah Michael?â? â??Can you turn that light out for me. Iâ??m trying to go to sleep.â? â??..Sure, Michael.â? And I do so. -A.
