Tough Love Part 55
I know Iâ??m typing after I just posted the last one, but hereâ??s this one!! `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Chapter 55 Do We Have a Future? My reflection looked back at me. Donâ??t get me wrong, I love my hair the way it is, but Iâ??m sick of it being black! I want to just DO something to it. I stayed after this Friday because I stayed after for Academic Decathlon. We had finished, and I was in the bathroom, bored with myself. â??When I say hey, then you say what's up? And I'll be like baby, do you miss me? When you say yes, then I'll say ditto Then you hit me back, with the less than symbol number three I got a clue how you feel for me 1-4-3 a smiley with a wink That's how you feel baby that's what's up A hundred forty characters, is more than enough Hey, my girl, my girl, she loves me I know I'm on her mind even when we don't speak Say, my girl, my girl, she loves me She hit me all the time my phone be ringing off the hook like, yeaahhh She hit me all the time my phone be ringing off the hook like, yeaahhh She hit me all the timeâ??She text me all the timeâ? When I heard that, I walked away from my reflection and stuck my head out the bathroom. There was HIM again (I KNOW. So many HIMS!! But hereâ??s the OTHER one!!) He keeps singing acapella, but I decide Iâ??ll walk out there, and join him. â??I hit you with a question maarrkâ? He goes back into the chorus. M.J. is pumping his chest like heâ??s working out. Man, there were so MANY punch lines; I canâ??t locate ALL of them. Heâ??s dancing with me, and weâ??re vibing pretty well. As heâ??s apparently finishing up, but doing the hip rocker, I get knocked out of my daydream, and noticed my daydream was just CRAP! I stayed there, standing like a re-tard! DANG IT!! I need to say something to him. I mean he was looking pretty hot todayâ??with his white tee and loose-fitting, slouchy jeans. But itâ??s what he put WITH the outfit. Heâ??s always wearing shades of different colors, and today, heâ??s wearing a long, brown leather jacket and some brown Vans. Now thatâ??s STYLE. M.J. also has his hair wild and curly. But he can do that. ME on the other hand was only wearing a light gray tee and a yellow and black stripe flannel with sleeves. In his mind, I was probably NOWHERE attractive. I hope he likes headbands, though. Danielle had made some and had given me one that was yellow and black: perfect for today. And then my jeans were fitting, but I had on some Vans, which isnâ??t too attracting. Not like I wore a mini-dress and a cute top to go over it today like my friend; who was WORKING IT! â??Aye Shawty whatâ??s your name, whatâ??s your numberâ? I look up and heâ??s looking at me too. â??Youâ??re heard for my age well forget that numberâ? Iâ??m not even sure of his birthday! â??I can put the thrill in your life I can make you dreams come to life I hear you talking and I know Iâ??m whatâ??chu likeâ? He starts walking to me, so by the grace of God, I feel my feet move too. â??Swagga on a hundred thousand million and beyond I see you talking to ya friends looking at me in the corner of ya eyeâ? Iâ??ve done that a few times this week. â??Girl you know I would rather be with you no one would matter â??Cause I I hear you talking and I know what you likeâ? He lightly touches my waist, and slowly remove his glasses. â??Iâ??ll take off my shades show you my eyes I can see right through you girl I know you ainâ??t shyâ? He lick his lips and I see his teeth a little. â??But it's worth over time See I got you talking I know yâ??all girls be talkingâ? He ad-libs. â??Aye Shawty Shawty what say? Girl I hear ya Get all up in my face let me see you move clearer Where all the girls with the dimples Smile for me itâ??s that simpleâ? â??But I doubt I have dimples and YOU barely do.â? He looks down and laughs as heâ??s holding my cheek. I move his hand from my right cheek. â??But, hey, I know youâ??ve been lookinâ?? at me. Thatâ??s because Iâ??ve been looking at you.â? I look down and smile. â??See.â? He picks up my face. â??But you donâ??t even know me, M.J. I donâ??t even know your real name.â? He sighs quickly. â??But you saw my eyes.â? â??Which I mustâ??ve miscalculated. Theyâ??re darker than I thought.â? â??Whatâ??chu expect? Iâ??m black and Latin.â? â??But with what?â? â??Mexican. So be surprised by anything.â? We hear footsteps. I turn around; Mr. Rat, one of the accelerated math teachers and drama director, so we know each other PRETTY well. â??Mr. Levi. Miss Swan.â? He gives us a stern look and we take a step from each other. After Mr. Rat is almost out of sight, M.J. takes a deep breath. â??Hey, Iâ??ll just see you around,â? a little coldly. THAT Iâ??m used to getting from him. I roll my eyes, feeling my cheeks burn and I wipe away the quick tears I DO have. Seems like my hair is the least of my worries now. I was late for another club, which we didnâ??t do much, and I was FINALLY able to wait for Dad to get me, but by the time he would be able to, it would be about 5:30, so I decide to walk in the bigger area of the parking lot and see if I can find some more of my classmates. Iâ??m trying to think on better things than M.J. The thing is, I feel like SOMEthing is following me. I finally look over my shoulder and see this tan family van. The people are looking at me, so now I look confuse! They stop it, and M.J. gets out. â??Hey.â? â??Hey,â? I say a little cautious. â??I know this sounds suddenâ?¦but uh, do you want to have dinner with me and my family? We can take you home afterward.â? I look from him and into the car. The woman, who must be his mom, got out. â??Hi. Sorry this is so soon, but son told me about you and we wondered if youâ??d mind dinner with us?â? I was about to respondâ?¦sorta, but I wasnâ??t sure what to say. â??We could call your father. My husband has an installed phone in his car. We can show you.â? So I look through her door and I see the phone. â??He might not be home yet. But heâ??ll trust me.â? So M.J.â??s mother let me see in her seat as I call. I called the workplace first. â??Hey, Dad. A friend and his family invited me to dinner. Can I go?â? â??Can I meet yâ??all there when youâ??re done?â? â??Dad,â? I say through my teeth. â??Well make sure his PARENTS are in the car. Who is it anyways?â? â??M.J. Levi.â? I glance at him with a little smile. â??Baseball player. Basketball player.â? I say after a pause. â??Iâ??ve heard of him. Havenâ??t heard nothing bad about him. Where are yâ??all going?â? â??I donâ??t know Dad, but weâ??re about to leave.â? â??Okay. But call me when you get THERE.â? â??Fine,â? and we hang up. â??He just worries,â? I say shamefully. When I get up from the motherâ??s seat, M.J. is already putting my things in the backseat and clothes the door behind us. His dad turns around. â??Hi, Iâ??m Ronnie Levi.â? â??Dorothy Levi.â? â??Lyric Swan.â? The demeanor M.J. has at school was just about the opposite. In school, heâ??s bolder but in the car, M.J. is much mellower; which matches his skin and Iâ??m fine with that. I actually like it better this way, minus the parents, maybe. We made little conversationâ??everyone in the car I meanâ??so I sat there, trying to figure out how M.J. has an African American father and the same for the mother. She must not be his real mom. M.J. smiled once I finally approached the table. I had gotten off the phone with Dad. He pulled my seat out for me and pushed it forward also. We were at a small table and were sitting across from his parentsâ??I was in front of his mom. I kinda learned M.J. is actually witty with no sarcasm and heâ??d whisper things like relax and make sure I was fine. Dorothy sits her glass down. â??So, is my son trying to be Casanova to you? This the first time heâ??s actually invited a girl with him and he knows he isnâ??t shy.â? I look at M.J., whoâ??s to my left. â??By the looks of things, seems like he is right now.â? I snicker. â??M.J. just tells me he feels misunderstood by girls sometimes. Donâ??t worry.â? â??Okay,â? I say. Geez, this seems more like a lecture than a what, OUTING? M.J.â??s mom spent most of her time telling me about the insecurities of her son instead of letting him get the FULL opportunity of even saying anything to me. I guess in the end, itâ??s better than if his SISTER was here. Sheâ??s kinda changeable, and I made it known that her talking to me anyway was gonna cease when I told her it would, and it did right then and there. Itâ??s just safe to say that we wonâ??t be baking cupcakes together. The outing lasted it for about two hours. â??Thank you, Pastor Levi.â? â??You can call me Mr. Levi if you want.â? â??Okay.â? I smile. Itâ??s not quite dark, so his parents could see us. â??Wish I could talk to you without my â??ole folks scorching my throat down with pressure.â? M.J. says right after we position ourselves in front of my door. â??Yeah, but my DADâ??S probably looking. I donâ??t have the best world either.â? â??Guess weâ??re too different.â? He shakes his head and plops down on the glider, tangling his hands in his hair. I SO wanted to gently loosen/pull his hands out his interesting hair. I knew I would surprise him, but I canâ??t surprise him and his PARENTS and MY Dad! So I just lay my hand on the glider. â??Stop. Stop worrying.â? He looks up with his shades on again of course. He smiles after my encouraging expression. So M.J. stands. â??So I guess this is good night.â? â??Doesnâ??t mean we have to forget about each other.â? Damnit LYRIC! WHAT about DONOVAN? And Michael?! He giggles briefly and pulls me in a little. His slowly pokes his lips out, and Iâ??m just about MORE than eager to touch bases with his light pink lips. Maybe now I can find a stable guy that I ACTUALLY have a chance with! I hear the wind. Then I feel it go through my left ear. Thatâ??s because DAD opened the door. â??Ready to come in?â? â??Uh, yeah.â? I say startled as M.J. and I back up from each other again. This time it is more, though. Iâ??m glad M.J. isnâ??t dumb. â??Hi, sir. Iâ??m M.J. Levi.â? He sticks his hand out. Too bad for him, my dad PURPOSEFLLY shake hands tight. â??Nice to meet you. Iâ??m CHIEF Swan of the police department. Iâ??d like to meet your parents.â? â??Yea, yes sir, theyâ??re out in the van. Iâ??ll get them for you.â? â??No, Iâ??ll just go with you to meet them.â? â??Thatâ??s fine.â? M.J. stammers. So he leads and I walk behind Dad. He didnâ??t say I couldnâ??t come. Either way, my excuse is that Iâ??m saying bye to his parents. Thatâ??s only polite, right? His parentsâ?? tries getting out the van, but Dad insist that they donâ??t have to. Only the father does and I can tell he looks an inch or two taller than Dad. Guess M.J. hasnâ??t caught on yet. When Dad smiles over a sort of stamp of approval for M.J., itâ??s time for us not to just be standing there anymore while our dads, including his step-mom, chatted. So we hug in a friendly manner this time, but itâ??s tighter. â??Think we have a future?â? he asks me in my ear. I wanted to answer, but I just smile, then I think my smile told it all. He rubs my chin real quick, pause then turn away to open the van door and waves to my dad. I close the van door for him. He rolls down the window. â??Iâ??ll call you sometime, â??kay?â? â??Okay.â? I whisper. When they finally back out, Dad and I huddle up as we wave the Levis good-bye. M.J.â??s question: if we got a future ringed in my head, so I say, â??Dad, whereâ??s Michael?â? â??Who knows? Probably working on an album.â? We shrug. We go in the house and I tell Dad of the few things we talked about, about M.J. and his family seeing â??The Wizâ? and luckily his parents donâ??t pay TOO much to the media, so they didnâ??t even know I was Michaelâ??s date for it. â??And that boy really THOUGHT heâ??d get that far with you on MY porch!â? Dad laughs. `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Long, long, long! And trust me, itâ??s still gonna be about MJ, the REAL one that is. Heâ??s gonna have to have a future, right? -I decided in the end to have Princeton as M.J. Levi in the story. All rights go to â??Mindless Behaviorâ?, who were influenced my thee MJ. I guess Princeton is just a great distracter for now and from two sources, I read heâ??s Mexican as well as black and also that heâ??s Latin/Spanish, which is equivalent in this case. And the â??textingâ? in the story is writing notes since our texting wasnâ??t invented yet and writing notes is a classic & more romantic! & at least Lyr didnâ??t kiss someone else this time. & a crazy change will happen next. Thanks for reading! --Aariyan.
