Als zanger, componist, producer, arrangeur en muzikant heeft hij de hedendaagse popmuziek vormgegeven en meer albums verkocht dan welke soloartiest ook. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens gehad over zijn live-shows die bol staan van de energie en verbluffende showelementen. Michael Jackson is met recht de King Of Pop. Als lid van de Jackson 5 werd de 11-jarige Michael in '70 al een superster. Voor het Motown label had de groep namelijk al vier nummer 1 hits gescoord. In '79 besloot Michael ook het solopad te bewandelen. Samen met producer Quincy Jones ging hij de studio in en nam zijn solodebuut "Off The Wall" op. Het album behaalde binnen no-time de multi-platina status en leverde nummer 1 hits op in de vorm van "Rock With You" en "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough". Nadat Michael een album maakte met de Jackson 5 en met zijn broers een uitgebreide tournee ondernam, ging hij in ’82 wederom met Quincy Jones de studio in om "Thriller" op te nemen. “Thriller” maakte van Michael een waar popicoon. De singles "The Girl Is Mine", "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean" en "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" werden superhits, terwijl het album wereldwijd meer dan 44 miljoen keer over de toonbank ging. Tot op de dag van vandaag is "Thriller" het best verkochte popalbum ooit. Na "Thriller" maakte Michael nog een album met de Jackson 5 waarna hij in '87 zijn nieuwe solowerk "Bad" op de markt bracht. Het succes van "Thriller" was natuurlijk niet te overtreffen, maar ook "Bad" werd een groot succes. Michael combineerde rock met dance en dat bleek een gouden greep. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "The Way You Make Me Feel" en "Man In The Mirror" werden grote hits en het album verkocht wereldwijd ruim 25 miljoen exemplaren. Hiermee is "Bad" het op een na best verkopende popalbum ooit. In '92 sloeg Michael met "Dangerous" een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn succesverhaal open. Michael had inmiddels zo’n status bereikt dat het publiek ervan uitging dat elk album minimaal vier superhits zou opleveren en dat elke single zou worden ondersteund met een verbluffende videoclip. Met "Dangerous" voldeed de King Of Pop moeiteloos aan die hooggespannen verwachtingen. "Black Or White" (de samenwerking met gitarist Slash), "Remember The Time" en "Heal The World" werden wereldhits. "Dangerous" ging wereldwijd ruim 23 miljoen keer over de toonbank. In juni '92 begon Michael aan zijn tweede wereldtournee die doorliep tot ver in '93. In '95 bood de King Of Pop zijn fans een schitterend carrière-overzicht met de verzamelaar "HIStory: Past, Present And Future, Book I". Het dubbelalbum liet ook nieuw werk horen. Zo nam Michael samen met zus Janet het nummer "Scream" op en componeerde hij het prachtige "Stranger In Moscow" en "Earth Song". Begin '96 stond de verkoopteller alleen in de V.S. al op zes miljoen verkochte exemplaren. Nadat Michael een vrachtlading aan awards had opgehaald (MTV Awards, World Music Awards en Grammy Awards) begon in september '96 de "HIStory World Tour". De tournee liep door tot '97. In dat jaar verscheen het remix-album "Blood On The Dancefloor - HIStory In The Mix". Voor het album werden acht nummers geremixt en schreef Michael vijf nieuwe nummers. In heel Europa behaalde het album de eerste plaats en werd het best verkopende remix-album ooit.
