Michael Jackson By: Kate Shirley Michael Jackson, also known as â??The Prince of Popâ? or the â??Artist of the Decade,â? was born in a very musically talented family. At a very young age, 5 years old, he was the lead singer of the Jackson 5, who formed in 1964. Michael Jackson and his brothers and sisters, Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, and Marlon, played in local clubs and bars in Gary, Indiana. The Jackson 5 moved to California after signing for Motown. The group name, Jackson 5, had to be changed as it was owned by Motown. They went back to the name, â??The Jacksons,â? as they were known in the earlier years. In 1977, Michael made his first film debut when he starred in the musical â??The Wizâ? playing the scarecrow. In 1982, Michael Jackson released the world's largest selling album of all time, â??Thrillerâ?. This album produced 7 hit singles, breaking yet again more records, and went on to sell over 50 million copies worldwide. â??Thrillerâ? was so successful that â??The Making of Michael Jackson's Thrillerâ? became the world's largest selling home video. In 1983, Michael performed the now legendary moonwalk for the first time. This also set a name for him. In 1984, Michael won a record breaking 8 Grammy awards in one night! Michael Jackson was known worldwide. In 1991, Michael signed with Sony Music, the largest recording contract ever and released his fourth solo album, â??Dangerous.â? Michael Jackson is still very popular today.
